Forces of nature formed this rugged corner of the Lake District over 450 million years ago. It’s legacy today is Honister Green Slate.
Honister Slate Mine is England’s last working slate mine making beautiful modern-day slate products and keeping ancient skills and techniques alive.
Our Honister Green Slate is extracted from the iconic Lake District mountain Fleetwith Pike – just a stone’s throw from our workshops. It is renowned for its olive green hue, quality, longevity and density.

About Honister Slate Mine We are a family run firm keeping England’s last working slate mine alive in the heart of the Lake District. Our business is at the top of Honister Pass – one of the steepest roads in the country where we source our slate from deep inside a neighbouring mountain, Fleetwith Pike. Formerly the Buttermereand Westmorland Green Slate Company Ltd, its owners today are the Weir-Wilkinson family.
Slate has been mined here at Honister Slate Mine for centuries…from occupying Romans to ancient Monks and Victorian pioneers. Working 11 miles of underground tunnels, we preserve an expertise and appreciation for Honister Green Slate, using ancient techniques to make truly unique contemporary products.
